Kiss of Midnight by Lara Adrian

Kiss of Midnight (Midnight Breed, #1)Kiss of Midnight by Lara Adrian
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Kiss of Midnight is the first book in the Midnight Breed series. The two main characters in this book are Lucan and Gabrielle. Lucan is the leader of the Breed warriors, a group of vampires sworn to protect others of their kind and humans from the Rogues, vampires who have basically lost control of themselves and will kill anyone in their way in their thirst for blood. Lucan is a strong, dominating male character who feels that he does not need a woman complicating his life. His primary focus is on protecting the Breed and trying to quietly fight his own demons without showing any weakness.

Gabrielle is a photographer who goes out with her friends for an evening and witnesses a murder committed by Rogues outside a nightclub. Lucan must track her down and silence anything she saw. When Gabrielle and Lucan meet, they are immediately drawn to one another. As the story plays out, we watch the two of them go back and forth with their relationship and at the same time watch Gabrielle try to figure out her life and where she fits in and Lucan fight the war that is starting around him. Ultimately, Gabrielle's life is put in danger, and they both have to figure out what it is they want from each other.

I really enjoyed the emotionality that the characters showed throughout the story. The author made it easy to see them as people and not just characters in the story. I am looking forward to reading on in the series and finding out more about the supporting characters we were introduced to in this book who will be playing larger roles in the upcoming books.

I've seen many comments that this series is very similar to J.R. Ward's Black Dagger Brotherhood series, and I found that to be the case. However, this series also has it's own unique plot and twists that want to keep you reading to find out what happens. If you like the BDB series, you'll like this one, too!
