Series:  The Guardians of Vesturon
Genre:  Young Adult Paranormal Romance (with a sci-fi element)
Heat:  Hot

About the Author:
One day, on her way home from work as a sales manager, A. M. Hargrove, realized her life was on fast forward and if she didn't do something soon, it would quickly be too late to write that work of fiction she had been dreaming of her whole life. So, she rolled down the passenger window of her fabulous (not) company car and tossed out her leather briefcase. Luckily, the pedestrian in the direct line of fire was a dodgeball pro and had über quick reflexes enabling him to avoid getting bashed in the head. Feeling a tad guilty about the near miss, A. M. made a speedy turn down a deserted side street before tossing her crummy, outdated piece-of-you-know-what lap top out the window. She breathed a liberating sigh of relief, picked up her cell phone and hit #4 on her speed dial.
A.M.’s Boss: Hello.
A.M: Hey Boss, I'm calling to let you know you can pick up my luxury Ford Focus at Starbuc ks near the interstate.
A.M.’s Boss: Why ever would I want to do that?
A.M.: Because I quit!
A.M. hit the end button and speed dialed her husband.
A.M.: Hey hubs, can you pick me up at Starbucks?
A.M.’s Hubs: Sure...having some car trouble?
A.M.: Not at all. I don't have a car to have trouble with because I just quit my job.
A.M.’s Hubs: WHAT?!
A.M.: It's time for a new career and I am going to be a very famous novelist.
So began A. M. Hargrove's career as a young adult paranormal romance author of self-published ebooks. Her series, The Guardians of Vesturon, centers around a family of six siblings and is a mix of humor, mystery, suspense and of course, love. Survival and Resurrection are her first and second full length novels, and Beginnings is her prequel novella to the series. Determinant, her third in the series will be released 6/30/12.
(It didn’t really happen like that, but you get the idea!)

Author Interview with Michael Cargill

Today we have author
Michael Cargill on our blog!

Not only did Michael do an interview for us,
he was awesome enough to give us 10 copies of his newest book, just released last week, to give away!
See below for details.

Look at the person sitting just across from you. It doesn’t matter whether they’re a loved one, a friend, or a complete stranger.

Now look at their face. Are they happy? Are they sad? Or are they angry? Can you even tell?

How well do you actually know the people closest to you?

Have you ever seen the real person that lies just underneath what you see…?

Thanks Michael for the interview and the giveaway!  When did you first know you wanted to be a writer?
Around about the middle of last year. Over the course of a couple of months, I had been sending out a load of silly emails to people at work, and they said I should write a book. So, in the end, I self-published those emails for free in Diary of a Dork, and that was that! I had no interest in writing at school; I was a right nerd, always wanting to play around on the computers. It's why I ended up in IT.

Is there someone in your life who inspired you to write? Was there another author or a teacher who encouraged you?
Nope. I think the only thing my teachers encouraged me to do, was to stop talking in class so much. Well, apart from one of my maths teachers. I once yelled out 'boring' as she stood next to the blackboard, warbling on about something really boring. When she stared at me, I thought she was going to eat me.

Tell us about Underneath. Where did you come up with the idea behind the story?
I had an idea bouncing around in my bald head for a sociopath character, but originally he was going to be far more calculating and analytical. I did some research on sociopaths - as in, I went to Wikipedia and typed in sociopath - and saw that they tended to be impulsive and irrational. My bald head also conjured up some characters for another story, one based in a police station. However, my bald head couldn't handle both ideas at once, and they got squeezed into one book.

What do you like to do when you're not writing?
I like relaxing, usually to the soothing sound of a naked Frenchman reading me poetry. Nah, not really. Maybe a bit of reading, a bout of shooting at people in Battlefield 3 or arguing with strangers on the Internet.

Or being a creep to the modmins on Goodreads.

Do you have any hidden talents?
Not entirely sure. Two left feet, perhaps? Being sarcastic?

Do you have any advice for budding writers?
Practice! And don't underestimate how much editing, and proof-reading, goes into a book before it's published. No author is capable of churning out perfect prose right off the bat; they will go through it multiple times, and then the editors go to town on it.

If you have a stab at writing something, and then feel embarrased about it when you come back to it a day or so later, then that is a good thing - that's exactly what your favourite writer does!

If you could be any mythical creature, what would you be and why?
For some reason, I really like the whup-whup sound that a helicopter makes, so that would be my roar.
I also like the way squirrels move, and run up trees, so I would be as nimble as one of the cute little buggers.
I would be about the size of a horse, not because I like horses, but because crazy women like horses, and they would all love me and feed me mints.

Not sure what to call this creature. Whuptail? Helihorse? Squirrelsteed?

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket hmmm?

Now for the giveaway!

The Moon Dwellers Blog Tour!

All My Best Friends are on Goodreads by David Estes

A year ago I would have told you that I’m not a huge online person. Facebook sounded like some kind of high school yearbook. Twitter was the sound a deranged squirrel made when chewing the guts out of an acorn. A Blog was what you threw on the fire when the flames began to dwindle. And Goodreads were the books I loved to escape to: the Harry Potters and the Eragons and The Hunger Games and The Lord of the Rings. Perhaps one of the coolest side effects of becoming an author: joining the online community.

I’m still not a huge Facebooker or Tweeter (although I do use them a fair amount), and while I enjoy writing my posts, the actual maintenance of my blog page via the widgets and gadgets and gizmos and driveshanks (I may have made up the last two), doesn’t interest me at all. But the one online arena where I’ve found my stride is Goodreads, or GR to the millions of users.

I originally joined Goodreads when a friend invited me. It was a cool place to catalogue and track the books I read. Cool. Like the characters in my new book, The Moon Dwellers, I think I must have been living under miles of solid rock and dirt to not have discovered Goodreads sooner. In my completely and utterly biased opinion, I think Goodreads is the best place for readers to meet in cyberspace to talk books, life, movies, and pretty much anything else, including male hygiene, which was a topic that I accidentally (well, technically it was on purpose) unleashed on my own Goodreads fan page (yeah, don’t ask)!

So why do I love Goodreads so much? The number one reason for me is the people. In one short year of participation, I’ve made more honest-to-goodness, close, friends-for-life friends than in the entire rest of my existence. You’re probably thinking that I’m a writer/reader hermit who never gets out and only has one friend who happens to be my mom, but that’s not really true (maybe half true though). In fact, I tend to be quite social and have always loved meeting people everywhere I go. And yet my friends on Goodreads are like family to me now. If you look at my friends list, you might say “Umm, 1,100 friends, clearly they’re all not really your friends.” But you’re wrong if you say that, because each and every person on my ever-growing Goodreads’ friend list is a true friend to me, because we’ve talked about similar interests, recommended books to each other, laughed together, been excited about the launch of a book, or maybe even joined a book club together. In short: we’ve lived together. And no, I don’t mean cohabitation. I mean living life, like to the fullest.

But how do you meet all these so-called “friends”? you might ask. Goodreads groups!! They’re the best things since vegetarian chicken patties (which is sayin’ a lot because my wife is vego—Australian for vegetarian—and I’m not, so when we eat vegetarian for dinner I like something pretty hearty). I love all my Goodreads groups, most of which are centered on young-adult or children’s books, which are the genres I primarily read and write in. The people in the groups I’m in are absolutely incredible and I treasure the friendship of each and every person. They enrich my life every day and make me a better person. I love you all.

I’m so obsessed with Goodreads that I’ve begun to get quite a reputation for being overly excitable, a hardcore book pusher, and making friends at a faster rate than my hair is growing (which is scary fast at the moment). As I continue to gain readers (which I hope I do!), I pray all my friends on Goodreads continue to view me as just another kindred reader who happens to love writing. Without all of you to share the experience of becoming a fulltime writer, none of it would be worth anything. You are the reason I write and I’ll always be one of you: a reader, a writer, an advocate, a friend.

So if you haven’t joined Goodreads yet, do it! You won’t regret it. And if you do, I’d be honored to be your first friend. Happy reading and I hope you all enjoy The Moon Dwellers, which will be published on June 30th! Here’s where you can find it on Goodreads:
http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/13931214-the-moon-dwellers

In a desperate attempt to escape destruction decades earlier, humankind was forced underground, into the depths of the earth, creating a new society called the Tri-Realms.

After her parents and sister are abducted by the Enforcers, seventeen-year-old Adele, a member of the middle-class moon dwellers, is unjustly sentenced to life in prison for her parents' crimes of treason.

Against all odds, Adele must escape from the Pen and find her family, while being hunted by a deranged, killing machine named Rivet, who works for the President. She is helped by two other inmates, Tawni and Cole, each of whom have dark secrets that are better left undiscovered. Other than her friends, the only thing she has going for her is a wicked roundhouse kick and two fists that have been well-trained for combat by her father.

At the other end of the social spectrum is Tristan, the son of the President and a sun dweller. His mother is gone. He hates his father. Backed by only his servant and best friend, Roc, he leaves his lavish lifestyle in the Sun Realm, seeking to make something good out of his troubled life.

When a war breaks out within the Tri-Realms, Tristan is thrust into the middle of a conflict that seems to mysteriously follow Adele as she seeks to find her family and uncover her parents true past.

Look for it June 30th!

Author Interview with Barry James

I'd like to welcome author Barry James to our blog today! Read on to find out more about Barry's novel, Dreams of Darkness...

Jordan Hanson was having a bad day. His girlfriend was acting distant, his cat had run off, his car was leaking oil, there was something screwy with the electrical system in his new house, and to top it all off he got caught in a storm. By the end of the day, though, Jordan would have given anything to get his old life back. Or any life at all, for that matter. Even an undead existence in which he was not about to be used as a tool to end the world would have been better than nothing....

Get your own copy of Dreams of Darkness on Amazon!

My review

To say that Jordan is having a bad day is a bit of an understatement, I think. Jordan is having an epically bad day to top all others. Without going into detail and giving anything exciting away, he loses his girlfriend, his cat, his house, oh yeah, and his life, all in one evening. Jordan is about to discover that his life (or death as the case may be) has much more purpose than he ever imagined.

I have been a fan of the horror genre for many years, and this book did not disappoint. The writing style was amazing with such attention to detail that it was easy to picture in your head what was going on. The descriptive language used by the author was equally amazing, describing in detail the creatures, surroundings, etc, and the dialogue was wonderfully written and not forced as can so often be the case.

The characters in the story were very well developed, from Jordan, who is the underdog but stronger than he ever realized, and an overall likeable guy, to Lord Ackerman who is the kind of guy you love to hate. Of course throughout the whole story you're rooting for Jordan not only because of the unimaginable that would happen if he lost, but also because he's exactly the kind of hero everyone wants in a story.

There was so much going on in this book with the plot, which, by the way, was different from anything I've read lately, and the author did a great job leaving you wondering what was going to happen next. I kept imaging I knew what was going to happen as I read, but it turned out I was always wrong, and the author's version was way better than anything I had come up with!

I would recommend this book for anyone who loves horror, and would even go so far as to recommend this book to any fans of Stephen King. I will be eagerly watching for more from this author.

Thank you Barry for agreeing to do an interview with us! When and why did you begin writing? What inspired you?
I began writing short stories in high school, when I took a creative writing class. I've always had strange, fantastical stories that just pop into my mind, and I wanted an outlet for them.

What about the horror genre in particular interests you?
I like to be scared in a way that is separate from reality--i.e., things that are scary but are unlikely to truly happen. I'm not a fan of serial killer stories, for example, because those things actually happen in the real world, whereas I'm not afraid that a zombie will really eat my brains (assuming he hasn't had bath salts).

What was the most difficult part of writing Dreams of Darkness?
The repeated editing process after the "writing" was done. The book was edited five times from the first to last page, and it is not a short book. This was all done with the assistance of my wife, who somehow managed to remain married to me despite this process. I am not the easiest person to edit with.

How has your environment/upbringing colored your writing?
As long as I can remember, I've always liked scary movies. I remember watching Vincent Price, Peter Cushing, Bela Lugosi, and all the greats of the old scary movie era. That said, I was also a very fearful child and had a deep terror of the dark and the things I thought were in it. I had to have a nightlight in my room until I was about 12, and slept with the covers over my head. By the time I was a teenager, in order to break myself of my fear of the dark, I made myself sit in dark rooms for longer and longer periods of time until I was no longer scared.

My fascination with being genuinely afraid has allowed me to write about fear in a more honest fashion. I know what it's like to think the monsters under your bed are really there, and I try to write from that perspective. I think the best way to make horror feel real is to use things you're really afraid of and "help" other people learn to be afraid of those things as well.

What do you like to do when you're not writing?
I tend to be pretty high-strung, so I like to work out for an hour a day to help with that. I also spend a lot of time working on decorations and ideas for my annual Halloween party (80-120 people every year). I like gaming, especially MMOs and first-person shooters. Oh, and I have one of those pesky J-O-Bs (teaching world history).

Can you share a little of your current work with us?
I'm currently working on the sequel to Dreams of Darkness (Realms of Shadow). Without giving away the ending of the first book, let's just say that the world has changed in a substantial way. The doorways to other worlds are open, and magic is accessible in a way it hasn't been in a long time. The beings who were considered mythical are now walking around in our world. Humanity is no longer on the top of the food chain--they just don't know it yet.

What draws people to horror novels? Why do we, as readers, like to be scared?
There are different kinds of fear. Fear for others is not fun, but fear for yourself (that you might see a ghost in a haunted house, or even a scary roller coaster ride) can be a hell of a rush. A good horror story (and every person's fears are different) gives you that excitement, exhilaration and trepidation but allows you to walk away from it when the story is done...at least until you turn off the lights.

What scares you?
My fear of the dark doesn't exist anymore--in fact, my wife hates it because I frequently leave all the lights off in the house when I'm on the computer writing or playing games, so she comes home to a dark house and doesn't know if I'm there or not. But there are still some things I find very disquieting. For instance, I don't like clowns: I always think they're hiding something behind the makeup. That goes double for mimes, which are nothing more than stealth clowns. I am also not a fan of dolls, especially those baby dolls that are ultra-"realistic"; those creep me out. And little teeny spiders--I really hate little teeny spiders. I've had a couple of instances where egg sacs opened up near me (once over my head). I don't care how many times you've seen Charlotte's Web--it is NOT cute.

Author Interview with Kendare Blake

I am super excited to have Kendare Blake, author of Anna Dressed in Blood, as a guest on our blog today!

Anna Dressed in Blood is our group read for June.
If you haven't read it yet, you can get it here:

Just your average boy-meets-girl, girl-kills-people story...

Cas Lowood has inherited an unusual vocation: He kills the dead.

So did his father before him, until his gruesome murder by a ghost he sought to kill. Now, armed with his father’s mysterious and deadly athame, Cas travels the country with his kitchen-witch mother and their spirit-sniffing cat. Together they follow legends and local lore, trying to keep up with the murderous dead—keeping pesky things like the future and friends at bay.

When they arrive in a new town in search of a ghost the locals call Anna Dressed in Blood, Cas doesn’t expect anything outside of the ordinary: move, hunt, kill. What he finds instead is a girl entangled in curses and rage, a ghost like he’s never faced before. She still wears the dress she wore on the day of her brutal murder in 1958: once white, but now stained red and dripping blood. Since her death, Anna has killed any and every person who has dared to step into the deserted Victorian she used to call home.

And she, for whatever reason, spares his life.

While you're here, check out Kendare Blake's contact info

Now for the interview...Thank you Kendare for doing an interview with us!  When did you first know you wanted to be a writer?
I think 5th or 6th grade. But I didn't try my hand at writing a novel until 7th. And of course, later on I abandoned the dream to go to college and stuff. But it came back.

Is there someone in your life who inspired you to write? Was there another author or a teacher who encouraged you?
Every writer I read inspired me to write. Twitter and Facebook weren't around when I was a kid, so I didn't have any interaction with authors, but there was a teacher who said I should be a writer. Not an english teacher, oddly enough. He taught Earth Science, and was like, my junior high advisor. Nice guy. Mr. Kosel. For a graduation present he excused all my tardies.

What a great present!  Do you have a favorite character from ANNA? Which character did you have the most fun writing?
Oh, I can't pick favorites! I'm in Cas' head the most, so I know him best. I have a sentimental fondness for Thomas. And I admire Anna. Carmel surprised me the most. I thought she was going to die. But who did I enjoy writing the most? Probably Tybalt.

Do you have anyone in mind who would be perfect to play Cas and Anna in a movie?
Ha ha, not really. I think a young Kevin Zegers might do for Cas. And maybe Zooey Deutsch (is that her name? The chick from Ringer, who's in the Beautiful Creatures movie) could have made a good Anna. Someone suggested Alexis Raich. Summer Glau, five years ago. Or Shiri Appleby from Roswell, also a few years ago.

What was the hardest part of writing your book?
I'm not sure. Normally I say it's getting started, because I'm a master procrastinator. But with Anna, there was no deadline, so I just started when I felt like it. Writing is difficult by turns. It streaks and starts, but there's a period of time in the middle of a book when it feels like you're in the back third of a marathon. The starting line is so far behind you and the end is still not in sight. That's sort of hard.

Truly though, I'm not complaining. The hard sucks but it's the best kind of hard there is.

How has your environment/upbringing colored your writing?
Well, it determined who I am, which determines what I write. I don't know really. I suppose it's affected it a lot. But I can't think of quite how.

What do you do to unwind and relax?
I eat. I love a good meal. I also hike, and play some super crappy tennis. If my horse lived close enough to me, I'd ride her. And of course, I read.

What book are you reading now?

Right now I'm reading THE DROWNING GIRL, by Caitlin R Kiernan. I may finish it today. Fabulous. Haunting. Fascinating. I'm also reading THE SCORPIO RACES, but only on airplanes, so I'll probably finish that one in August. I'm starting SPELLBOUND by Blake Charlton, who I'll meet at ALA. I like to juggle at least three.

Do you have any hidden talents?

Hidden talents? But of course. I can creepily bend only the first knuckle on all of my fingers. And I'm a whiz at Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon.

Can you share a little of your current work with us?

Oh, like a little sneak peek? I'd love to. Let me find a section. *goes to find a section* Here you go:
Athena shoved herself past trees, through ferns. She dragged herself along by vines. In the corner of her eye, she saw her own red blood streaking across shiny green leaves.
What a pathetic parody I am. Of Artemis. A limping, wounded waste. She would laugh in my face.
It hurt. Everything hurt. The feather in her lung. The holes in her shoulder and leg. But Hermes' light still blinked in her chest. She could still feel him, somewhere ahead. So she kept on her feet when she'd rather have crawled. She didn't know how far she'd gone before the faint sounds of keening and grief reached her ears. Someone was dead.

That's from ANTIGODDESS #2. No one has seen that but me. And now you! It's one of the leads, the goddess Athena, soldiering along after a bit of a skirmish. She's fairly Sarah Connor. I wonder who would win in a fight between her and Anna.

Thank you again for taking time out for us today!  Before you go, do you have any advice for budding writers?
The same advice I always give. Read, read, and read a little longer. Pay attention to style, and how things work. Also, what doesn't. And then, write. Write, write, and write a little more. Getting it down is the important thing. You can always edit later. I'll all evolve over the course of your career.

Thanks for having me by Shut Up & Read! I hope Anna Dressed in Blood proves a good June book for you :)

Sheri's review
5 of 5 stars false
June 2012
Crimson Midnight has it all…sexy werewolves (my personal favorite), vamps, demons, warlocks, and crazy fairies. Oh, and I forgot to mention the action, drama, mystery, magic, humor, and romance…What more could you ask for in a book?

Rose moved to the big city of London to get a fresh start, and with a new job, a city to explore, and old friends to keep her company, everything should be perfect…insert scary laugh here. Rose moves in with a family friend, Flo, and Flo's two sons, and before long she comes to realize that not everyone is who, or what, they seem.

I LOVE the characters in this book. Rose is tough and sassy. She is a fighter and stands up for herself. I am so over the female leads who sit around helpless waiting for the big strong man to save the day. Rose is very much not one of those. But, don't get me wrong…there's absolutely nothing wrong with having a big strong man (or two) waiting on you hand and foot…anyway, back to the book. I really enjoyed Rose's witty personality. The back and forth with her and Harold and Roman is so much fun. Some other characters that deserve a mention are Thistle, who really turned out to be a likable character; Harold, the troublemaker; Raven, the strong but silent type; and Roman…What do I say about Roman? His character is awesome! I love his and Rose's relationship, or lack of as the case may be. Seriously, there is nothing more exciting than a love that isn't meant to be. The authors did a great job shaping each of the main characters in the story and giving us enough background so that we got to know them. I enjoyed having the multiple points of view throughout the story so we got to see the story fleshed out through different eyes.

And did I mention the twists and turns? Heck yeah. Enough to make sure you'll have no clue what's going to happen next. I love being surprised with the ending, and wasn't disappointed here…but I do have one issue to take up with the authors…Did that really happen? You know what I'm talking about, don't act like you don't. Um, I really think you better fix that somehow in book two. And speaking of book two, is it almost finished? It's hard to be patient when I'm dying to know what happens. Could you hurry, pretty please?

She is pretty and talented - sweet sixteen and never been kissed. He is seventeen; gorgeous and on the brink of a bright future. And now they have fallen in love. But... they are brother and sister.

Seventeen-year-old Lochan and sixteen-year-old Maya have always felt more like friends than siblings. Together they have stepped in for their alcoholic, wayward mother to take care of their three younger siblings. As defacto parents to the little ones, Lochan and Maya have had to grow up fast. And the stress of their lives—and the way they understand each other so completely—has also also brought them closer than two siblings would ordinarily be. So close, in fact, that they have fallen in love. Their clandestine romance quickly blooms into deep, desperate love. They know their relationship is wrong and cannot possibly continue. And yet, they cannot stop what feels so incredibly right. As the novel careens toward an explosive and shocking finale, only one thing is certain: a love this devastating has no happy ending.

Ash, former prince of the Winter Court, gave up everything. His title, his home, even his vow of loyalty. All for a girl… and all for nothing.

Unless he can earn a soul.

To cold, emotionless faery prince Ash, love was a weakness for mortals and fools. His own love had died a horrible death, killing any gentler feelings the Winter prince might have had. Or so he thought.

Then Meghan Chase—a half human, half fey slip of a girl— smashed through his barricades, binding him to her irrevocably with his oath to be her knight. And when all of Faery nearly fell to the Iron fey, she severed their bond to save his life. Meghan is now the Iron Queen, ruler of a realm where no Winter or Summer fey can survive.

With the (unwelcome) company of his archrival, Summer Court prankster Puck, and the infuriating cait sith Grimalkin, Ash begins a journey he is bound to see through to its end— a quest to find a way to honor his solemn vow to stand by Meghan’s side.

To survive in the Iron realm, Ash must have a soul and a mortal body. But the tests he must face to earn these things are impossible. At least, no one has ever passed to tell the tale.

And then Ash learns something that changes everything. A truth that turns reality upside down, challenges his darkest beliefs and shows him that, sometimes, it takes more than courage to make the ultimate sacrifice.
