Riptide by Susan Hayes
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
So I'm a sucker for anything shifty. When I saw this book was about selkies I knew I had to read it. I've read about werewolves, bears, coyotes, leopards, even dragons, but never selkies. Plus, the premise of the book sounded promising. Basically what you've got is Jessica, an independent, successful female. She heads to her family's cabin, which she has not been to since she was a child, to grieve the loss of her mother and figure out what she wants to do with her life. Things don't go exactly as planned and soon she finds herself face to face with quite possibly the two sexiest guys alive – Rory and Evan.
Jessica is a fun lead character. I especially liked her because she was not some virginal priss who didn't know what was what in the bedroom. She knew what she wanted and she was not afraid to go after it. Of course she had reservations and hang-ups, and that is what made her character seem real. Rory and Evan…holy hotness. All I can say is where can I find a pair?
Worth mentioning is Jessica's fabulous best friend, Vivian, who we never actually get to meet during the course of the story, but we get a glimpse into her personality through Jessica's phone calls with her. And then of course Tucker and Byron, selkie bar owners extraordinaire. The reason I mention them is because they are full of incredibly sexy yumminess and the focus of book two in this series. I can't wait!
So along with the great characters, there was a lot of fun and teasing in the story, and some very hot and sexy scenes with Jessica, Rory, and Evan. I will say I knew very early on where the story was headed, but it didn't detract from the overall telling of the story, and it was a very enjoyable read.
I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
