Q & A with Gates Watson
1. Tell us a little bit about your main characters.
The main characters of Dutchman's Curse are the ship's captain currently going by the name of Genny Hopman. She is hundreds of years old but looks to be in her mid-thirties. She is the chosen of a being known as a Kraill. The Kraill is a sentient being that has inhabited her ship for thousands of years. The two have fought in many wars, travelled throughout many galaxies and still don't really know what makes each other tick. The antagonists are cousins Dale and Sheamus Lochlan and Dale's nephew Tom Clancy. Dale and Sheamus are fighting for power within the trade clans and each believe they should be leaders of all the clans. Morrigan Allen (the first officer on Genny's ship) is in the unfortunate position of being the one person that can cement either Sheamus' or Dale's claim to leadership.
2. Who designs the covers for your books and what is that process like for you as an author?
My cover was designed by Vila Design. It was an awesome experience, seeing my book come to life under Tatiana's skillful hands. She captured exactly what I wanted and was a joy to work with.
3. Describe your ideal writing spot.
My ideal writing spot is in my office at my desk. I have a window next to me I can look out and music to listen to. I don't have any distractions unless I want them.
4. What is the best advice you have been given?
The best advice I have been given is 'keep writing'. No matter what just keep writing. You can always go back and change things later but write the story first then add more later as needed. Don't get to the point when you are editing instead of writing. Write first edit later.
5. As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?
When I was a child I wanted to be a nurse or a scientist. But I couldn't stand the sight of blood and chemistry wasn't my strong suit.
6. Which do you prefer: hard/paperbacks or ebooks?
I collect several authors in hard/paperback, but try new authors in ebooks first to see if I like them. If I do, then I go out and buy the hard/paperback for my collection. It drives my husband nuts!
7. If you could be any paranormal creature, what would you choose to be and why?
Oh goodness, hard question. I guess I would be a shapeshifter. I would love to be able to turn into an animal maybe a hummingbird so that I could go anywhere and listen in to conversations but still go unnoticed.
8. What book are you reading now?
Currently I am reading Fort Lupton by Claudia Hall Christian. It is the latest in her Denver Cereal series.
