Q & A with Joyce Proell

Hi everybody. It’s great to be here today and thanks to Sheri and Leigh for hosting. I’m Joyce Proell, a writer of historical mystery and romance. I’ve a new book coming out called A Wicked Truth. It’s a vintage romantic mystery set in New York in 1881.

Thanks for joining us today, Joyce.  How about we start by learning a little bit about your main characters.
I’ll let the hero and heroine speak for themselves.

Cady’s first impression of Doyle:

She yelped and spun toward the blaring voice, heart pounding in her throat. A glowering man filled the doorway. Danger clung to him as tangible as the fur collared overcoat draped over his shoulders.

“I…ah…” She swallowed convulsively, her gaze riveted to the frightening man. Whiskers shadowed his strong chin while hair, black as oil, spilled in haphazard strands across his forehead.

“I asked you a question,” he sneered.

“She’s dead,” she whispered.

His blue eyes grew wild. “What?” He exploded into the room.

Cady shrieked and snatched a bronze statue from a nearby end table. “Don’t come any closer!”

Doyle’s first impression of Cady:

To his dismay, the bothersome woman took up residence in his favorite armchair, her back straight as a ruler and her resolve unshakable. Doyle sighed, resigned to the stubborn force in his library. Yet who knew? Perhaps she possessed information which might prove helpful. As it stood, he needed an abundance of help and luck to get him out of this mess. For now he considered her a mere stain among some very dirty laundry.

Not favorable impressions, as you can see, but falling in love has a way of changing things for the better.

Describe your ideal writing spot.

My favorite spot for writing would be in the south of France sitting in the shade of an old sycamore tree, high above the Mediterranean. Big Sur in California would be great, too, with the Pacific sparkling on the horizon. Ahh. I’m feeling relaxed just thinking about it. On second thought, it’s probably just as well I hunker in my home office. I’d never get anything done staring at the waves.

Who designed the covers for your books and what was the process like?

Each book had a different artist. I gave them an essence of the story along with suggested visuals, and voila, the cover appears.

How do you keep busy when you’re not writing?

I walk or swim daily. The quiet time is a great for plotting or fleshing out story characters. I love to cook and collect recipes—tons of them. A daily crossword puzzle is a must.

If you could have any superhuman ability, what would you choose and why?
Being invisible would be fun. Think of all the places you could go? It’d be first class, free travel to anywhere in the world. Whee!

What is the best advice you've been given?

Best advice given to me

Just plant your butt in the chair and write—it’s the only way to a finished product.

It was a kick being here today. Thanks for stopping by. You can’t know how much your interest is appreciated.

And readers…What’s the best advice you’ve been given?
