Sweet Blood of Mine (Overworld Chronicles #1)
byJohn Corwin
From Mega Nerd to Super Stud.

Justin Case and women do not mix. Man boobs, a love of Kings and Castles, and being tight with the "nerd" crowd certainly don't win him any points either. After rescuing Katie, his crush, it turns out she might not be the girl he thought she was, while Elyssa, the school's Goth Girl, turns out to be more. Can high school get any more confusing?

Determined to improve himself, he joins a gym and meets a sexy girl that just oozes a "come hither, Justin" vibe. Until she attacks him in the parking lot, and Justin realizes she's no ordinary girl but a being with supernatural speed and strength. After a narrow escape and an excruciating migraine headache, he wakes up with supernatural abilities all his own: speed, strength, and the ability to seduce every woman he sees.

While that might sound like the perfect combo for any hormonal teen, Justin is a hopeless romantic who wants his first time to be special. Is that too much to ask for? But he doesn't know what he is or how to stop his carnal urges. One thing is clear: If he doesn't find answers there are other more sinister supernaturals who would like nothing better than to make him their eternal plaything and do far worse than kill him.

Justin Case is your typical nerd. After rescuing Katie, his long-time crush, from a bully, things are beginning to look up for Justin. But, after an unfortunate string of events, Justin "loses" Katie, what little social standing he had, and even his two best friends.

This is a book where no one is who they seem to be at first. Justin never quite knows throughout the story who his friends are, and he has to make the tough decision of who he can trust.

I love Justin. In the beginning of the book he was really just your average guy. Throughout the book, even though his whole world is going topsy-turvy, he still stayed true to himself and stands up for what he believes. I enjoyed watching him evolve over time, both physically and emotionally, throughout the story. He's an overall nice guy…definitely the kind of guy you want on your side in a fight.

I also love Elyssa. She seems so tough and unapproachable to Justin at first, but as he gets to know her he realizes she's just a person too…well, sort of. Elyssa has her own secrets and problems, but she, too, in the end decides that she has to stand up for what she knows is right.

Sweet Blood of Mine is a must read. John Corwin's writing style is seriously addicting and laugh-out-loud funny! I loved the humor in this book, and being inside Justin's head was so much fun. I can't wait for the next book in the series!

The Katie Johnson and Nathan Spelman Interviews
[This is Miley Morgan, chief editor and lead reporter for the Edenfield High Illuminator newspaper. Justin, Elyssa, Stacey, and Shelton had some interesting things to say, but I'm exhausted, especially after the pink unicorn invasion. I don't know how Shelton did that, but I want more. I also want some Godiva chocolate syrup and the hairstylist Elyssa uses, but duty calls. It's time to dig deeper and see what Justin's classmates have to say about the paranormal activities surrounding this former nerd.]

[Katie Johnson is the first on my list. She's a shapely little minx, undoubtedly a perfect target for someone of Justin's depravities. I find her sitting in her car in the parking lot before school starts and slip inside.]

Katie: [Shrieks and puts a hand on her heart.] Miley? You scared the crap out of me.

Me: I need to ask you a few questions. About Justin.

Katie: [Her eyes glaze over (obviously Justin has already gotten to her).] He saved me from Nathan, that big lug. I guess you heard about that?

Me: Everyone heard about how the overweight nerd, Justin Case, took on the huge football player and somehow broke his nose. But is that the real story?

Katie: [Nods.] Yeah. I thought for sure he was going to die. Somehow he didn't.

Me: How do you explain Justin's sudden transformation from mega-nerd to super-stud? He went from man boobs to ripped within a couple of weeks.

Katie: Mega-nerd to super-stud? Oh, I like that. Kind of like a slogan for a movie! [Claps her hands and giggles.] I guess he started working out and eating healthy.

Me: In just a couple of weeks?

Katie: Maybe he went on that nutty KE Diet, where they stick a tube up your nose and down into your stomach. Although, I don't remember seeing a feeding tube in his nose.

Me: Changing subjects: Would you agree Justin has an unusual effect on the females around him?

Katie: I can't put my finger on it. It's like he just exudes sexiness. And he's amazing at football. Did you see that last game? [She leans closer to me.] Off the record, I went to a party after the game and we made out. It was awesome. [Giggles.] I think we might have—

Me: Have you noticed anything unusual about him?

Katie: Besides his great butt?

Me: How about pink unicorns?

Katie: Where?! [Looks around the parking lot.]

[Obviously Miss Johnson is too far under Justin's spell to provide any meaningful information, so I leave her and find Nathan Spelman outside in the parking lot with his friends where they are terrorizing one of the school nerds. Nathan is an all-star football player and also a humongous jerk. But not in the same sexy way that Shelton is a jerk. (Note to self: Omit that last statement for the official report).]

Me: Nathan, would you say you hate Justin Case?

Nathan: [Narrows his eyes.] Who are you?

Me: Miley Morgan with the school newspaper.

Nathan: We have a newspaper? [Looks at one of his ape-sized friends.] Maybe we should use it in the bathroom stalls. You know, like toilet paper? [His goons laugh.]

Me: How very clever and witty. [I suppress a sigh.] Tell me about your history with Justin.

Nathan: I used to want to squash his nerdy little butt just for existing. [He glances at their current target who has now escaped and is fleeing for the school entrance.]

Me: Really? Doesn't that make you feel like a typical cardboard cutout bully? Like a one-dimensional character in a bad romance novel?

Nathan: [Sighs and motions for his friends to leave. When we're alone, he leans down.] You can't tell anyone what I'm about to tell you.

Me: Fine. We're off the record.

Nathan: My entire life has been focused on football. My dad was an all-star and so was his granddad. I hate it. I hate the pressure. I look at someone like Justin who gets to do whatever he wants—play Kings and Castles, watch sci-fi movies, eat whatever he wants—and it makes me furious that I can't have that life. So angry that I just want to lash out.

Me: Are you being serious?

Nathan: I just want to live my own life but I can't. I hated Justin for that. But now Coach Burgundy is blackmailing him into playing football and all the pressure is on him to win, not me. So now I feel kinda happy about the situation. Heck, I even like Justin a little bit.

Me: Wait a minute, the coaches are blackmailing him?

Nathan: Did you know that my dad won't even let me get a cat or one of those cute little Yorkies? He says they're 'too girly'. But they're adorable!

Me: Well, they are kind of—

Nathan: Why can't I live my own life? [Looks to the heavens and holds his hands out to the side.] Why, God why?

Me: Um, are you okay?

Nathan: [Shoulders shaking with grief, he leans down—way down—and puts his head on my shoulder, crying like a baby.]

[As I feel Nathan's tears soak my expensive blouse, I can't help but wish he would simply go visit a psychiatrist. Obviously, he has far deeper issues than the typical football-playing bully that is so overdone in movies and books these days, but I, for one, am not qualified to help him.]

[On another note, I feel as though I've hit a dead end in my potentially Putlitzer-Prize winning story on Justin Case. A tear trickles down my cheek and I soon conjoin my sobbing with Nathan's as I see my brilliant future as an award-winning journalist circle like a turd down the drain of a filthy toilet. The only silver lining is Shelton. Sure, he's a bit old for me, but any guy who can make me see pink unicorns is a winner in my book.]

[Here ends the journal of Miley Morgan, aka the Truthinator.]
