Author Interview with T. Michelle Nelson

I'd like to welcome T. Michelle Nelson to the Shut Up & Read blog today!

Thank you for joining us!

When did you first know you wanted to be a writer?
Iā€™m not sure I ever set out to be a writer. I just enjoy writing. I donā€™t know if I ever thought Iā€™d be published or have a book in print, I just wanted to make up stories. Iā€™d still be writing even if no one wanted to read my books.

What is your work schedule like when you're writing?
I donā€™t have a set work schedule. I try to write every day, but if I donā€™t feel like it, I donā€™t push it. I want to be excited about what I write. I donā€™t want it to feel like a chore.

Tell us a little bit about your MC, Lily.

Lily is an unconventional heroine. Sheā€™s thirty-five, a single mom, a little goofy and she doesnā€™t always have it together.

What do you feel is the hardest part of writing a book?

Deciding when to stop. I like to revise and change things constantly. Every time I think Iā€™m done, I always come up with something to do differently.

What do you see as the influences on your writing?

Edith Wharton is my favorite author. Her characters were always so real and somewhat flawed. I think thatā€™s why they are so relatable.

What do you do to unwind and relax?

I play on a volleyball league with some great friends, and I love to go canoeing.

If you could be any supernatural creature, what would you be and why?

A vampire, of course! Who wouldnā€™t want to live forever and have all those powers?

What book are you reading now?

Currently Iā€™m reading Soulless by Gail Carriger

For Lily Drake, slaying vampires is easy...Dating them is the hard part.

Lily Drake is your everyday hard-working single momā€¦until a gorgeous vampire shows up on her front door who she mistakenly assumes is her blind date for the evening. As one crazy scenario after another unfolds, Lily finds herself falling in love with two vampires, slaying the evil ones, and being prophesied as the savior of the entire undead race.
Deciding between pizza and Chinese take-out will no longer be one of the hard decisions facing Lily Drake once she is emerged into vampire society. Humanity or immortality? That doesn't hold a candle against this question - which of the two handsome vampire cousins?

The Life and Death of Lily Drake is not your typical vampire love story. Itā€™s a tale about the humorous mistakes a woman makes simply trying to survive not only life, but the dating scene. How will Lily manage working full-time, taking care of her young son and fighting the undead at every turn?

Lily will have to figure it out, but who better to save the world than a mom?
