The Moon Dwellers Blog Tour!

All My Best Friends are on Goodreads by David Estes

A year ago I would have told you that I’m not a huge online person. Facebook sounded like some kind of high school yearbook. Twitter was the sound a deranged squirrel made when chewing the guts out of an acorn. A Blog was what you threw on the fire when the flames began to dwindle. And Goodreads were the books I loved to escape to: the Harry Potters and the Eragons and The Hunger Games and The Lord of the Rings. Perhaps one of the coolest side effects of becoming an author: joining the online community.

I’m still not a huge Facebooker or Tweeter (although I do use them a fair amount), and while I enjoy writing my posts, the actual maintenance of my blog page via the widgets and gadgets and gizmos and driveshanks (I may have made up the last two), doesn’t interest me at all. But the one online arena where I’ve found my stride is Goodreads, or GR to the millions of users.

I originally joined Goodreads when a friend invited me. It was a cool place to catalogue and track the books I read. Cool. Like the characters in my new book, The Moon Dwellers, I think I must have been living under miles of solid rock and dirt to not have discovered Goodreads sooner. In my completely and utterly biased opinion, I think Goodreads is the best place for readers to meet in cyberspace to talk books, life, movies, and pretty much anything else, including male hygiene, which was a topic that I accidentally (well, technically it was on purpose) unleashed on my own Goodreads fan page (yeah, don’t ask)!

So why do I love Goodreads so much? The number one reason for me is the people. In one short year of participation, I’ve made more honest-to-goodness, close, friends-for-life friends than in the entire rest of my existence. You’re probably thinking that I’m a writer/reader hermit who never gets out and only has one friend who happens to be my mom, but that’s not really true (maybe half true though). In fact, I tend to be quite social and have always loved meeting people everywhere I go. And yet my friends on Goodreads are like family to me now. If you look at my friends list, you might say “Umm, 1,100 friends, clearly they’re all not really your friends.” But you’re wrong if you say that, because each and every person on my ever-growing Goodreads’ friend list is a true friend to me, because we’ve talked about similar interests, recommended books to each other, laughed together, been excited about the launch of a book, or maybe even joined a book club together. In short: we’ve lived together. And no, I don’t mean cohabitation. I mean living life, like to the fullest.

But how do you meet all these so-called “friends”? you might ask. Goodreads groups!! They’re the best things since vegetarian chicken patties (which is sayin’ a lot because my wife is vego—Australian for vegetarian—and I’m not, so when we eat vegetarian for dinner I like something pretty hearty). I love all my Goodreads groups, most of which are centered on young-adult or children’s books, which are the genres I primarily read and write in. The people in the groups I’m in are absolutely incredible and I treasure the friendship of each and every person. They enrich my life every day and make me a better person. I love you all.

I’m so obsessed with Goodreads that I’ve begun to get quite a reputation for being overly excitable, a hardcore book pusher, and making friends at a faster rate than my hair is growing (which is scary fast at the moment). As I continue to gain readers (which I hope I do!), I pray all my friends on Goodreads continue to view me as just another kindred reader who happens to love writing. Without all of you to share the experience of becoming a fulltime writer, none of it would be worth anything. You are the reason I write and I’ll always be one of you: a reader, a writer, an advocate, a friend.

So if you haven’t joined Goodreads yet, do it! You won’t regret it. And if you do, I’d be honored to be your first friend. Happy reading and I hope you all enjoy The Moon Dwellers, which will be published on June 30th! Here’s where you can find it on Goodreads:

In a desperate attempt to escape destruction decades earlier, humankind was forced underground, into the depths of the earth, creating a new society called the Tri-Realms.

After her parents and sister are abducted by the Enforcers, seventeen-year-old Adele, a member of the middle-class moon dwellers, is unjustly sentenced to life in prison for her parents' crimes of treason.

Against all odds, Adele must escape from the Pen and find her family, while being hunted by a deranged, killing machine named Rivet, who works for the President. She is helped by two other inmates, Tawni and Cole, each of whom have dark secrets that are better left undiscovered. Other than her friends, the only thing she has going for her is a wicked roundhouse kick and two fists that have been well-trained for combat by her father.

At the other end of the social spectrum is Tristan, the son of the President and a sun dweller. His mother is gone. He hates his father. Backed by only his servant and best friend, Roc, he leaves his lavish lifestyle in the Sun Realm, seeking to make something good out of his troubled life.

When a war breaks out within the Tri-Realms, Tristan is thrust into the middle of a conflict that seems to mysteriously follow Adele as she seeks to find her family and uncover her parents true past.

Look for it June 30th!
