There's a woman in the graveyard.

Conall Mackay never put stock in ghost stories. Not even after thirteen years serving as the cemetery keeper in the village of Whitetail Knoll. But things change. Now, his daughter is dreaming of a figure among the tombstones. The grounds are overrun by dark thorns almost faster than Con can clear them. White fog and gray ribbons creep up on him in the night, and a voiceless beauty beckons him from the darkest corners of the graves.

When the world he knows starts to unravel, Conall might finally be forced to believe

When she isn't visiting the worlds of immortals, demons, dragons and goblins, Brantwijn fills her time with artistic endeavors: sketching, painting, customizing My Little Ponies and sewing plushies for friends. She can't handle coffee unless there's enough cream and sugar to make it a milkshake, but try and sweeten her tea and she will never forgive you. She moonlights as a futon for four lazy cats, loves tabletop role-play games, and can spend hours watching Futurama, Claymore or Buffy the Vampire Slayer while she writes or draws.

In addition to her novels, Brantwijn has had several stories published in anthologies by Breathless Press, including the 2013 Crimson Anthology and 2014 Ravaged Anthology. She's also had a short story published in the Cleiss Press Big Book of Orgasm and the anthology Coming Together Through The Storm. She hopes to have several more tales to tell as time goes on. She has author pages on GoodReads and Amazon, and loves to see reader comments on her work.

Q & A with Author Brantwijn Serrah

Q:  Tell us a little bit about your main characters.
A:  Conall Mackay is the leading man in His Cemetery Doll, an old soldier living with his adopted daughter on the edge of the town's cemetery. He's gruff and very no-nonsense; he's not a man for superstition and he has no interest in faith, despite the fact his one friend is the town's Catholic priest.

His daughter Shyla is almost the opposite: bright, cheerful, curious, and full of imagination. She helps her father tend the cemetery grounds and has never been afraid of the place. She delights in dreaming up stories about the people who are buried there. She adores Conall, despite what a grump he is.

Conall's leading lady is a new arrival to the cemetery: "the Broken Doll". He can't decide if she's a ghost, a monster, or a figment of his imagination. Perhaps she's a sign he's going mad, because she can't possibly be real. Broken Doll appears to be something between a perfect, porcelain figurine, and a jerky, damaged marionette. Sometimes she is ethereal; others, violent and wild. She draws him to her, fulfilling a primal hunger he's almost forgotten...but she goes into a frenzy when his daughter comes near. Whether her appearance in his graveyard is an unexpected blessing, or the beginning of his worst nightmares, Con doesn't know.

Q:  Describe your ideal writing spot.

A:  My ideal writing spot is probably not ideal at all, when I think about it. Something about lying on my stomach on my bed seems to give me the most comfort, and therefore the most focus, when I want to sink into a story. Whenever I write somewhere else, I'm tempted to stop everything and move to that spot. There's one major problem with this, though: it is way too easy to fall asleep!

Q:  Who designed the covers for your book and what was that process like for you as the author?
A:  There's a cover artist with Breathless Press who usually designs my covers, but His Cemetery Doll was very, very different from the others. I had such a detailed image of Broken Doll in my mind: her porcelain appearance; her shroud of ribbons wrapping around her; the blindfold over her eyes; the cracks in her mask; the "joints" of her limbs (she is, after all, quite literally a doll). I knew, going into the art process, that an image with that many specific details would be very hard to come by, and I told my usual artist I would be comfortable with leaving details out, if need be, as long as the basic feel of her "doll-like" nature remained intact. It was the cover artist's idea to fight for the extra details, and she petitioned our publisher to commission a custom illustrated cover, to make sure Broken Doll received the unveiling she deserved. The final artist for His Cemetery Doll came from Happi Anarky, a wonderful creative talent! And I couldn't be happier with the results.

Q:  How do you keep busy when you're not writing?
A:  I like to draw, paint, or create other kinds of artwork. I like to learn new ways to create things, like teaching myself to customize My Little Pony toys or to sew pillow pets, or learning how to use an artist's tablet to create digital art. I also, of course, enjoy reading.

Q:  If you could have any superhuman ability, what would you choose and why?
A:  I've always wanted to be a shapeshifter, like Mystique. I have a new story coming out soon with a Superhero theme, and my main character is pretty much exactly the kind of shapeshifter I'd want to be.

Q:  Which do you prefer: hard/paperbacks or ebooks?
A:  I enjoy the ease of using my Kindle, lately, but on the other hand I like to have something tangible to collect, when the book is special enough. I also love to collect signed books, so even though I have lots of E-books and audiobooks, I'll buy the hardback for the pleasure of getting it signed by the author. I find audiobooks are my most common format for reading, lately, and that's because I happen to have a day job where I can listen to them regularly. I got through the whole Dresden Files series in about two months that way!

Q:  What book are you reading now?
A:  I'm currently reading two: Timeless Night, by Torie James, which I've been looking forward to reading for months! My schedule gives me limited time to read-by-eyeball anymore, though, so it's been slow going, and that kills me. In audio, I'm re-reading Mockingjay, by Suzanne Collins. The Hunger Games trilogy are the sort of books I can read over and over.

One Less Warlock by Judith Post

One Less Warlock by Judith Post My rating: 4 of 5 stars I think it's hard in a short story to create a unique setting, characters, etc., and still get some sort of story line in. In One Less Warlock, Judith did an excellent job of molding the story in such a way that we got a taste of a distinct world and character personalities, and a complete story to go with it. In this short story Judith was able to pack in witches, vampires, a sexy Were, succubus, voodoo, murder, and mystery, all in only about 20 pages. Pretty amazing. I enjoyed the story and Babet, the main character, and am looking forward to more of her in the future. View all my reviews
