True by Erin McCarthy

True (True Believers, #1)True by Erin McCarthy
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I really struggled with a rating for this book. I went back and forth between 3 stars and 4 stars…so it would be a strong 3.5 if that were an option. I enjoyed the story but there were a couple of issues I couldn't get past.

Here is what I liked: I enjoy New Adult romances, so while this story was not original in any way (bad boy from the wrong side of town with tattoos (of course) and reputation for 'playing the field' meets the good girl from a middle to upper class family, and a virgin no less), I was not really expecting much more than that. I agree that True can be compared to many of the other NA books out there, but there were things that made it stand out on its own. First off was Rory. I enjoyed her snarkiness and honesty. She was shy and socially awkward (I can so relate to her on that level!), but I liked the personality she brought to the story. I felt she was an original character in that she was not a book geek but rather a scientific/analytical type. Tyler was harder to get a handle on, but he ended up being okay, too.

Here is what I didn't like: While I liked Rory, her character was too inconsistent for me. She was strong in some aspects and completely wishy-washy in others. If she would have stayed true to form the entire story, I would have probably loved this book even more. However, there were many times throughout the book I felt she should have spoken up for herself when she chose not to, and she lost points from me for this because it seemed inconsistent with what we knew of her personality.

The biggest issue for me, though, was the conclusion, or lack thereof. The ending to True came so quickly, I wasn't expecting it! It's like the author decided she was done and just ended it abruptly, leaving everything hanging. There are so many unresolved issues that really needed to have been addressed here and now for this story to be complete. I guess it's a good thing I wanted more, right? But as it was, I felt like the story was missing something and there was no real resolution.

The next book in this series is out now, which is Riley's story, which I am looking forward to.

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

One Less Warlock by Judith Post

One Less Warlock by Judith Post My rating: 4 of 5 stars I think it's hard in a short story to create a unique setting, characters, etc., and still get some sort of story line in. In One Less Warlock, Judith did an excellent job of molding the story in such a way that we got a taste of a distinct world and character personalities, and a complete story to go with it. In this short story Judith was able to pack in witches, vampires, a sexy Were, succubus, voodoo, murder, and mystery, all in only about 20 pages. Pretty amazing. I enjoyed the story and Babet, the main character, and am looking forward to more of her in the future. View all my reviews
